11-Suez Canal
At 3.30am I awoke to see the start of our journey through the Suez Canal, but it was 4.23am before we started to move from our holing position in the Gulf of Suez.
At 5am the sun started to rise above the low cloud and at 5.10am we were the second ship to enter the canal, with a line of ships behind us. Yes, there are quite a lot of photos in this gallery, but it was hard to give a perspective of this amazing feet of nautical engineering without them.
Some people say there is nothing much to see except desert, as you slowly, at no more than 8 knots, glide along this narrow piece of water, but they are wrong.
It was a once in a lifetime experience for us and we thought it well worthwhile.
As with the other Middle East countries, one can get a glimpse of the tension of living in this part of the world, where no nation seems to trust anyone else around them, even though all bar one are supposedly Islamic.
Yes, there were miles of desert, but there was also a lot of activity, of various kinds, to be seen as well. I hope this gallery conveys some of that.
