14-Athens and the Acropolis, Greece
We arrived at the Port of Piraeus early and had to wait for the ferry 'rush hour' to clear before we could enter the port.
Port Piraeus, is the gateway to Athens and the ferry traffic was amazing, but with 227 inhabited islands in the Aegean and Ionian seas to service, that is not surprising.
Our excursion here was to see the city of Athens and, of course, the Acropolis, the ruins of the iconic 5th-century B.C. temple complex that sits on one of Athens' rocky hilltops. The Acropolis is undergoing extensive restoration, as can be seen from some of the photos.
Like the ruins of Petra and of the Karnak Temple in Luxor, one is left wondering how they managed to build such huge and high places without todays technology.
After leaving the Acropolis, we spent time driving and walking in Athens.
