Lake Taupo Area - Central North Island
We landed at Auckland Airport and after a night in Auckland we drove south to Turangi, in the centre of the North Island and at the southern end of Lake Taupo. Tuarangi is also just north of the Tongariro National Park, and the highest mountain on the North Island, Mt Ngauruhoe.
We took a plane flight over the National Park and its three mountains which are actually situated above a huge active volcano. We also rafted down the nearby Waipakihi River and its white water rapids.
